Current to 11 Oct 26Trent asked whether to build a single dashboard or separate dashboards per hospital group. Bethan recommended a single dashboard with hospital group as the top-level filter, noting pre-indexing ensures good performance with multi-table joins.
Problem: Trent was designing the referral-relations dashboard and needed guidance on architecture: a single flexible dashboard with filters or multiple group-specific dashboards, and whether querying multiple tables would perform well.
Handling: Bethan recommended a single dashboard with hospital group as the top-level filter for flexibility and user experience. She assured Trent that performance would be good because the brain pre-indexes relationships during the nightly refresh, making filtered queries fast even with multi-table joins.
Watch: Positive adoption signal; customer is designing appropriately for their use case.

The referral-relations team will mainly be filtering by hospital group and looking at physicians within each group, their recent calls, and active referrals. Should I build a single dashboard with hospital group as the main filter, or separate dashboards per group? Also, are there any performance considerations if the dashboard pulls from the three tables (physicians, affiliations, hospital groups) plus call and CRM data? Just want to get this right before we show it to the team. Thanks, Trent
- public_reply · Bethan Lister 26 May 2026 14:49A single dashboard with hospital group as the top-level filter will work best. Users can switch between groups without flipping between dashboards, and it's more flexible. The brain handles the multi-table join efficiently, so performance won't be an issue: the brain pre-indexes these relationships during the nightly refresh, so filters and queries are fast even with multiple joins. I'd suggest starting with a single dashboard and adding detail pages for specific physicians or referral sources if the team wants to go deeper.
